Today I read the following line:
“Sunday September 20th 2009 has been designated as the third annual London Freewheel Festival ”
Ok, so what is this?
Apparently, its event to get as many people cycling as possible in London. London Freewheel will offer a traffic-free ride round some of London’s most famous roads and landmarks. The event is organised by the Mayor of London, and it’s aim is to get Londoners on their bikes.
The first London Freewheel event in 2007 was launched by Ken Livingstone, and a 14Km route was carved out within central London, which was closed to motorists but fully open to the cyclists. The route took participants past a number of landmarks including the London Eye, Victoria Embankment, Westminster, Whitehall, St Paul’s Cathedral, and The Mall.
The Freewheel event is looking for cycle Marshalls, experienced cyclists who are willing to volunteer their time to help out.
Teams of cycle marshals will be leading rides from many London boroughs. These will link up to one of four regional hubs, where riders can have a break before continuing on to the central London course.
As event is open to all cyclists, regardless of age or ability, and new cyclists and families are particularly welcome. Cycle marshals can help to encourage cyclists of all levels to enjoy a good day out.
Last year the event attracted 50,000 last year, and this year it’s bigger and better. For more information click here
