Just The Tonic

Comedy is a funny thing. It’s often an enjoyable and relaxing experience, sometimes thought provoking, sometimes inspiring and a the same time, often in the same night, it can be the kind of experience that makes you wish you had never left the safety of the house. In my experience, New Year’s Eve can fall into a similar category. There are times when it literally is the best night of the year and your memories are of shared laughter, shared love and champagne as spangly streamers filled the air. At other times it can be the most depressing, lonely and soul-destroying night of the year, bar none.

I remember one particularly bad experience when I was at that stage of not really having the funds to have the New Year’s Eve of my dreams but being determined to give it a damn good shot. I went with a friend and a substantial bottle of half-inched Verve Cliquot to the centre of the town we were in ready for the stars and the spangles. At 11.45 it started to rain, my friend started snogging a total random and at midnight I was sick on my shoes. Things have never really got ad bad as that again but I do treat the annual boozefest with some caution these days.

I also find myself looking for alternative activities that won’t necessarily end in me being sick on myself, which is why I’m bringing Just The Tonic to your attention. Just The Tonic has 15 years of experience of producing comedy shows around the country with a permanent establishment first in Nottingham and now London. The likes of Sean Lock, Noel Fielding and Josie Lock have all played here in the comfortable venue near Leicester Square. On New Year’s Eve you can see Charlie Baker, George Ryegold and Phil Nichol. Fed up of crap New Years Eve’s? Could be just the tonic! (www.leicestersquaretheatre.com).
